Back from the Future
Now called Willingboro, Levittown, New Jersey - "...a Good Place to Live" - was the third Levitt community to be built by Levitt and Sons, following Levittown, New York and Levittown, Pennsylvania.
Construction for Levittown, NJ, began in 1958 and ended in 1972; the fourteen years brought a plethora of changes, aside from the seemingly overnight metamorphosis of a rural community into a (some would say) instant suburban paradise, Levittown, NJ had quite an eclectic history. Other changes included a name change - twice, a newspaper strike - during the Grand opening, changed Township boundaries, courtesy of the New Jersey Legislature, and integration...yes integration. Levitt and Sons tried something a little different with each of the three projects. In New York, only one basic design was offered for the entire project, while the Pennsylvania project featured several designs at the same time - albeit only one type was featured in each subdivision. At the suggestion of his wife, Rhonda, Levitt became more innovative this third time around - Levittown, NJ, featured a variety of styles at the same time, in the same sections. Anyhow, the phenomena that was Levittown/Willingboro developed something like this:
