REMEMBERING 1958...
Greetings...
We invite you to join us in taking a stroll down memory lane.
1958 bought Americans recession with a vengeance and large increases in unemployment (over 7.0% - 5.2 million). Inflation dipped below 2% so those having jobs earning the average wage of $3,851 per year were quite well off. American cars continued to get bigger and heavier with larger engines, but imports also continued to grow - this was the year Datsuns and Toyotas from Japan went on sale in the US. Alaska became the 49th State and America's first satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral. 1958 was also the year that the Microchip was first developed in the US by Intel, which was the beginning of the very early stages of the personal computers, or PC's, we all use at work and at home today. 1958 was the year of the Munich air disaster in which 7 Manchester United Players died, and the year the Great Chinese Famine began, and, ending in 1961, caused the death of nearly 30 million through a combination of natural disasters and poor planning. Rockefeller became governor of New York in 1958, and in October, Bigfoot was first spotted. Of course, in 1958 Levitt began sales/construction in New Jersey, the reason for this 50th Anniversary Celebration.
