LEVITTOWN

"...a good place to live."

Back from the Future

The first of the many planned neighborhoods in Levittown was Somerset Park.  Two, three, and four-bedroom model homes (House A, House B, and House C) with one-car car garages were available.  The price of the homes, ranging from $ to $, included a refrigerator, stove, and clothes washer. In addtion, House C featured a countertop range with separate wall oven and a clothes dryer.  For the first time, all styles of homes were available in the same section for a more attractive and diverse streetscape.  Schools, and community amenities such as churches and shopping centers, were also included in each park.

The prototypes for the first Levittown, New Jersey homes were built in Levittown, Pennsylvania, on Terrace Road in the Twin Oaks section.  The Cape Cod had three exteriors--two contemporary and one traditional.  The Colonial, which did not make it into the New Jersey houseline, had a modern style, with sliding aluminum windows.

An Exhibit Center, where house models could be viewed, was opened on Route 130 North, in what would be the Willingboro Center. Although six sample homes (two of each of the 3 house types) were available for inspection, only one of each house type was furnished.  The homes were furnished by Alice D. Kenny, reported to be Bill Levitt's secretary.  Ms. Kenny later became Mrs. William Levitt, Bill's second wife.
